The ISL G is the natural choice in alternative-fuel engine technology. With industry leading performance, it combines all the advantages of clean burning, low cost natural gas with “no compromises” in power and torque. It moves to Euro 6 emissions with minimal changes from Euro 5, making it ideal for alternative fuel bus and truck applications.

The ISL G engine block is shared with the Cummins ISL diesel – a full skirted block for increased rigidity and strength. The design provides superior piston ring and bearing life, improved coolant flow and targeted piston cooling, for greater reliability and superior durability. The engine’s life to rebuild and rebuildability are similar to those of diesel engines. The 8.9 litre ISL G uses advanced stoichiometric combustion with cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) to meet ultra-low emissions requirements. The cooled-EGR system takes a measured quantity of exhaust gas and passes it through a cooler to reduce temperatures before mixing it with fuel and the incoming air charge to the cylinder. This lowers combustion temperatures and knock tendency, reducing engine out emissions and noise. With a pedigree of over 1 million engines to date, Cummins cooled EGR technology is proven in a wide range of installations.

Stoichiometric combustion is the ideal combustion process where all fuel and oxygen is completely consumed. This means that no unburned fuel or oxygen exits through the exhaust. Combined with cooled EGR it improves power density and fuel economy to create a high performance natural gas engine. It also enables the use of simpler, lower cost exhaust aftertreatment systems. Since its introduction for EPA 2010 and Euro 5 emissions, thousands of truck and bus customers have noticed the impressive low-end torque, transient response and quiet operation of the ISL G. Compared with previous Cummins lean-burn natural gas engines, ISL G torque at idle is improved over 30 percent, and fuel economy is improved by up to 5 percent.

Cummins ISB6.7 G on-highway engine assembly

In 2016, Cummins Westport will introduce a new dedicated natural gas engine for transit, shuttle and school bus, medium-duty truck, and vocational vehicle markets. Based on the Cummins ISB6.7 diesel platform, the Cummins Westport ISB6.7 G will offer up to 260 hp (194kW) and 660 lb-ft (895 Nm) of torque, and will be available with automatic transmissions. Certified at launch to 2016 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board emissions standards, the ISB6.7 G will also meet 2016 EPA GHG requirements.
The ISB6.7 G features the same advanced combustion controls with Three-Way Catalyst (TWC) as Cummins Westport’s ISL G & ISX12 G engines. It operates on 100 percent natural gas, which can be carried on the vehicle in either compressed or liquefied form (CNG / LNG respectively). It can also run on 100 percent biomethane or renewable natural gas, which meets published Cummins fuel specifications.

Canada’s largest CNG fuelling station now open

Emterra Group, along with partners U.S. GAIN Clean Fuel and C.A.T., hosted the grand opening of the its newest CNG fuelling station today.
The new CNG station is located at 1611 Britannia Road in Mississauga, Ontario just off Highway 401 and Dixie Rd and is the largest public CNG fuelling station in the country so far.
The day saw more than 100 people gather at the new station to hear from key executives of the venture, along with local dignitaries who weighed in on the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Hosts of the event also gave demonstrations to attendees on how the fuelling station worked and how CNG will be ‘pumped’ by drivers. cng 1
The new, state-of-the-art facility is the fourth and largest CNG station Emterra has invested in. The company opened a CNG station in Winnipeg back in 2012, one in Chilliwack, B.C. in May of this year and one a few weeks ago in Victoria, B.C. The company, which invested more than $50 million in the project, purchased more than 100 CNG refuse vehicles to serve the Peel region.
“(This) station will be open to other fleets and operators of CNG vehicles, expanding opportunities for the transportation sector in and around the GTA to go greener using a lower cost fuel, helping to make Ontario trucking businesses more competitive and sustainable,” said Emmie Leung, CEO and founder, Emterra.
C.A.T. also made the investment and purchased 100 CNG trucks recently to show its commitment to CNG.
“You’re going to start seeing these trucks on the road as early as January,” said Daniel Goyette, president, C.A.T. He added that C.A.T. has made arrangements with GAIN to open up another CNG fuelling station just west of Montreal next month. Together, to better service C.A.T.’s growing CNG fleet, they will also build stations in Scranton, Penn.; Charlotte, N.C.; and Laredo, Texas in the near future.
“This is our first station. Our second station will be opening up in November in Coteau-du-Lac, Que. just west of Montreal,” Marc-Andre Paquin, business development manager at GAIN confirmed. “Those two cornerstone stations will allow fleets from Ontario, from Quebec, from Canada, and from the United States to operate in one of the busiest transport corridors in Canada using CNG. This is going to have a direct positive impact on their businesses, on the communities in which they work, on the environment, and really using CNG is going to be the major reason why these same companies will be able to meet and exceed their transportation emission goals.”
cng 2Paquin added that in one year, GAIN projects that the Mississauga station will use the equivalent of 1.5 million litres of diesel fuel – which represents a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
David Bradley, CEO of the Canadian Truck Alliance and the Ontario Trucking Association praised Emterra, C.A.T., and GAIN for its partnership in helping to make Ontario a greener province.
“Never before in the trucking industry’s history is our member’s economic goals been as aligned with society’s goals in terms of the environment, particularly with greenhouse gas emissions, than today,” he said. “There are going to be a number of challenges: infrastructure, getting people used to new ideas, pricing, all of those sorts of things. But I think today is really good example of what it’s going to take. It’s going to take partnerships. Our industry is not going to solve our problems, or reduce our carbon footprint on our own. We need to work with our suppliers, whether that’s equipment or fuels, and we need to work with legislatures. This is a challenge worth fighting. And this is a great start today.”
Also in praise of the commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and in attendance, was Glenn Murray, Ontario’s minister of environment and climate change who said: “Using compressed natural gas for vehicle fuel has many advantages, such as being clean, affordable and readily available. I applaud Emterra Group for doing their part to support a low carbon economy in Mississauga, one of Canada’s busiest transportation hubs. This is the type of innovation to help keep Ontario strong and prosperous.”
According to Emterra, using CNG collection trucks can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20%.

Automotive diesel engine entering the age of “Euro IV”
On April 14, 2014, the ministry of industry policy department issued the law of “the People’s Republic of China ministry of industry and information technology number 27 announcement”, announced on December 31, 2014 to abolish the applies to the third stage of vehicle emission standards (hereinafter referred to as Euro III) diesel product announcements, and the Euro III diesel products can’t be sold start from January 1, 2015.

Common sense for diesel engine

When customer choosing commercial vehicle products, will face the choice of petrol and diesel power, so why do most commercial vehicles choose diesel? How much do you understand the common sense of diesel engine? let’s learn some preliminary understanding of diesel engine together.
1) What do the power and torque respectively represent?
Power refers to the object the work done in a unit time, which is the object to tell work done efficiency. Watt (w) is the international standard unit, 1 kw = 1000 w, 1000 joules of work within one second, its power is 1 kw. We often use maximum power to describe the dynamic performance of the car. The power, commonly known as Horsepower (HP) or kilowatts (kw), 1 horsepower is equal to 0.735 kw.
The rated power of the engine generally refers to the engine carrying the necessary parts during the highest power operation. The effective power of the engine refers to the net output power from crankshaft.
Torque, the size of moment of force in physics, which is equal to torque force times arm of force, and the international unit is cattle • m (N, m). In addition we can also see k. gm as the torque unit, 1k.gm = 9.8 N m, torque is often referred to as force. The greater the power, the greater the torque, the higher power drive the car as well.
Simply stated as follows:
Power – how fast can run, how heavy can drive
Torque – how fast to speed up, how steep slope can climb
Power = torque x speed
2) Why the diesel engine has strong torque?
Relative to the gasoline engine, the basic conditions for the same case, the power of diesel engine is more powerful. As is known to all, the power from petrol engine is by the spark plug ignites mixed gas, but mixture gas is not easy to ignite for diesel engine. So the diesel engine use “compression ignition”, which is also the important characteristic different from gasoline engine.
Diesel engine compress the air first (some diesel engine compression ratio can reach to 20:1), then inject the atomized diesel to the high temperature and pressure air to cause explosion to finish work done. Because of the large diesel engine compression ratio, the reaction is also big, namely we often say as big torque. The gasoline engine adopt “light” the compressed gas mixture (normally the compression ratio is 10:1), with the blast work done. Because of the gasoline engine mixture has a lower density than diesel engine before the “compression ignition “, so the reaction is lower than diesel engine after the explosion, namely that is why the diesel engine has more powerful explosive power than gasoline engine.
3) Why diesel engine is more fuel-efficient?
Firstly, for one litre fuel, diesel’s combustion heat is more than 9000 calories, and only 7000 calories for gasoline. Secondly, under the condition of the engine power is equal to torque, diesel engine has less fuel consumption than gasoline because of the fuel heating value. In addition, cause the diesel engine has higher compression ratio, so the energy conversion efficiency is also higher than gasoline engines.
4) Why can Turbo-charge increase the power and torque?
Diesel engine can increase the intake air quantity through the turbine, to improve the driving force of the work done. Namely take use of the high-pressure exhaust fumes as power, which drive the other side shaft to “suck” more air through the inlet turbine, to increase the effect of explosion power and torque. The current high-end diesel engine has generally adopted the turbocharged technology.

Cummins DCEC L Series Diesel Engines to Power Iraq City Bus Fleet in Bagdad.

On 6th January 2015, a total of 313 units King Long inner city buses were shipped from Xiamen port in China, bound for Iraq. This important milestone marks the largest bus order to Iraq and also a significant number of engine units for the Dongfeng Cummins joint venture DCEC.
The buses will use Cummins ISL8.9 engines especially adapted for service bus application, with powers between 280-400hp (206-294kw). Compared with the same displacement engine, Cummins ISL series engines are lighter and more compact, with Euro 4 and 5 emission standards, high power per litre ratio and low-speed torque the performance can be compared with higher displacement engines from other manufacturers. Cummins ISL series engines greatly increase the carrying capacity of the vehicles. The operating efficiency, stability, reliable and durable and excellent fuel economy make it to be an ideal power choice of large bus and coach. For higher emission standards, buses equipped with Cummins engine ISB6.7 can meet Euro 6 emissions and have successfully been exported to France, Iceland, Italy, Norway and other developed countries.

Trucks powered by DCEC Cummins ISZ13L post strong results at 2015 Dakar Rally

After a very solid performance in the 2014 Dakar rally with the highest placed driver in 12th place, the Ginaf team returned for an improved performance in Jan 2015 to record a top ten finish. Using DCEC engines manufactured in China at the Cummins/Dongfeng joint venture, the lead Ginaf Team from the Netherlands powered to tenth place and improving on last year’s result. Ginaf is a specialist truck manufacturer based in Holland making construction, mining and race trucks and is owned by Chinese Hi-Tech Group Corporation (CHTGC). Their trucks, and DCEC engines, are built to face the toughest terrain across Argentina, Chile and Bolivia.

The racing version 13 litre Cummins ISZ13 diesel engine can deliver up to 900hp with a maximum torque of 3500 Nm. DCEC ISZ13L engine power covers 400 to 550HP with Cummins XPI super high pressure fuel injection system to reach the highest injection pressure 2400bar and max torque of 2508Nm. Torque reserve is more than 40% to meet all kinds of working conditions. Cummins completes first QSK95 rail engine

CUMMINS has dispatched its first production QSK95 diesel engine for the rail market to Siemens' plant in Sacramento, California, where it will be fitted into a 200km/h Charger diesel locomotive.
The 95-litre 16 cylinder engine is rated at 3.28MW and is equipped with Cummins' Modular Common Rail Fuel System (MCRS) with quad-turbocharging. The QSK95 is also equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust aftertreatment, enabling it to meet US Envirnomental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 emissions standards.
Cummins will deliver a batch of QSK95s to Siemens to equip 35 Charger locomotives ordered by Illinois Department of Transportation in 2014 on behalf of the states of Illinois, California, Michigan, Missouri and Washington.
The QSK95 will also power Charger locomotives for All Aboard Florida and Maryland commuter rail operator Marc.

CUMMINS CELEBRATES OPENING OF NEW SEYMOUR TECHNICAL CENTER FOR HIGH-HORSEPOWER ENGINES

Cummins Inc. today celebrated the completion of construction of the Seymour Technical Center, a global engineering center office for the High-Horsepower Engine Business in Seymour, Indiana. The center is co-located with the Seymour Engine Plant in close proximity to 22 test cells dedicated to engine research and development work for mining, rail, oil and gas, marine, power generation and industrial applications.

The Seymour Technical Center is the global focal point for Cummins engine development and low-emissions technology for 19 to 95-liter diesel engine platforms covering a wide 500 horsepower to 5,100 horsepower range. The center is also leading the development work for a new generation of clean, high output natural gas engines.

Through telepresence rooms and other technology, close working connections will be maintained with the worldwide Cummins engineering community at other high-horsepower sites in the United States, United Kingdom, China and India.

The technical center and the concurrent expansion of the manufacturing plant at the Cummins Seymour facility represent a major investment in Seymour. Hundreds of highly specialized engineers and technicians will begin working in the new technology-focused and collaborative office environment in the coming weeks. With the 700 employees at the Seymour Engine Plant, Cummins will have more than 1,100 employees at the facility.

Engineers and technicians in Seymour develop products for a wide-array of applications. These products are manufactured in Seymour, other locations in the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and India.

The plant in Seymour manufacturers some of Cummins most attention-getting products, 70 percent of which are exported to countries outside of the United States. The QSK95, which is manufactured in Seymour, is the most powerful engine ever built by Cummins with up to 5,100 horsepower (3,281 kilowatt) output. It is currently in use in locomotive and power generation applications. When paired with the Siemens® Charger® locomotive, these engines will be used to power commuter passenger service projects in five of the United States.

Accelerated Engine Development

The engineers at the technical center have access to 22 engineering test cells at the Seymour plant, including 12 new cells recently installed with up to 7,000 horsepower (5,220 kilowatt) capability, sized for generator sets and power modules as well as engines. The test cell work can focus on specific aspects such as fuel efficiency, engine endurance under high load factors, or near-zero emissions measurement. Engines can be tested on every type of diesel and natural gas fuel, including fuel blends. 

Features of the Seymour Tech Center 

At nearly 90,000 square feet, the Seymour Tech Center includes highly flexible office environments. The exterior design, which features large, cantilevered steel canopies is a reference to the engineering work that will happen within the building. Raw materials and exposed structural, mechanical, and electrical systems in the interior work to create a shop-like environment, while also relating to Cummins engineering foundation.
 
"When we designed this facility we looked at how we could create a building that embodied our values," said Phil Henry, Director, Cummins Engine Business Facilities. "With that end in mind, we established environments with things like workstations on casters and technology-rich collaboration spaces, which promote innovation. We also created a building in which energy efficiency was a key feature."
 
Passive solar management for daylight control and active energy-efficiency management reduces the carbon footprint of the building to the lowest possible levels. Ergonomic designs are used throughout the workspaces and for high-tech audiovisual capabilities. With a mix of workstations, walk-stations and informal seating, employees are able to choose where they work. Several dozen meeting rooms and focus booths also are available to employees. The new cafeteria is used by both plant and technical center employees.
